17 MINUTES PODCAST
Episode 5 β Transcript
[00:01]
Hello friends, welcome back to 17 minutes. I'm your host Robyn Savage, the behavioral brand strategist, and we're gonna go down story, story time lane. Yeah, let's call it story time lane today. Okay, so in last week's episode, I talked to you about how the summer really rocked me, how I shared grief really openly and publicly.
and sort of the impact that that had on my business, both positively and negatively. And then I also discussed how sharing quickly, vulnerably in the moment is how I'm wired to share and how you might not be wired that way. So if you haven't listened to that episode yet, I highly recommend it. It's gonna give you really cool insight into why and how I make some of the decisions that I do in terms of showing up online.
and why those decisions might not actually be scientifically, behaviorally aligned with you. So go take a listen to that episode if you haven't yet. But today, I'm gonna kind of continue on with this story. So here's what happened, okay? So I came home from a really hard summer. I mean,
I was like swimming in the depths of the oceans with the sharks. You know, like that's how it felt. Like my body was in survival mode. My nervous system was beyond maxed out. was solo moming my kids back in Ontario for almost a month, moving through grief with my family. And it was just, yeah, a lot, you know? And I know that we all go through it. You might have your own version.
of this, you know, I'm guessing that you did not have the same summer as me, but your summer or your fall, whatever season you're in may be challenging you in some way, you know, like you might have something going on in your relationship. You might have some chaos going on in your home, in your business, in your family, maybe you're caretaking for someone. Maybe you're moving through your own healing process. Maybe you're
[02:20]
losing a friendship, maybe you're having an identity crisis, who knows, right? But every single time we sort of move through something in our lives, it disrupts the flow in our business. It disrupts our rhythms. It disrupts our consistency. And that's okay, right? Like I really do believe that there are seasons of our lives that are not intended for growth. They are intended for survival.
And in those survival periods is when we learn lessons, when we are tested, when we are challenged to really meet ourselves in these seasons, to hold ourselves, to put one foot in front of the other, to make it through so that we can get to the other side. And when we get to the other side, that's when we extract the lesson. You know, we make lemonade from the lemons that life gave us. And that's when...
expansion comes. That's when creativity strikes again. That's when we can apply what we learned and continue. So I went home for the summer. I got back. I mean, when I got back, was like, okay, I knew there was going to be this period of sort of reintegration and figuring out like, who am I now? And what am I doing now?
Like let me remember how to be a human basically. But what I didn't expect was this sort of like forgetting or this sort of like detachment from all of my old habits, all of my old rhythms, my routines, the things that I had been consistent with for so long, I just.
sort of completely forgot how to do them. And so I was really flailing you guys, like, you know, every day felt like I was just this like boy out in the ocean, like, like, okay, let me just float along and try and figure this out. And for a while that was okay. I gave myself grace and it felt good. It felt good to just let myself exist out in the wide big sea and ocean without
[04:41]
having to anchor myself or without forcing myself to move the way that I once did. So I let myself stay there for a while. And if you're going through something or if you're on the other side of something, I highly recommend letting yourself sit in that space of nothingness for a little while because that's really when I find myself again. That's when I am able to sort of like,
take away the lessons. That's when I'm able to see the bigger picture. That's when I'm able to say, okay, what did the universe really give me in all of that muck and all of that challenge? Like what is the learning? What am I walking away with? So don't be afraid to sit in that space of nothingness for a little while and let yourself sort of marinate in what life is teaching you. And then though, there's going to be a day or a moment when you are like, okay,
I have been floating adrift for a while and I am ready to put my anchor down. I'm ready to settle back in. And this is eventually where I got to, right? This moment of like, all right, Rob, we're good now. We've been here for a minute and your body, your brain, your dreams, your vision, everything is calling you towards finding a new normal.
you know, whatever that means, like creating a new rhythm, getting back into a new flow, reestablishing what you want your life to look like, getting your feet back on the ground, finding consistency, building another relationship with discipline and focus and certainty and confidence and empowered action. So I had no idea where to start.
All right. And for someone who's like really motivated and driven and like good at doing stuff, it was sort of an interesting space to be like, why can't I just do the stuff that I used to do? Like, hello, tap, tap, tap, like wake the fuck up self that does stuff, but she was not waking up. So I got desperate.
[07:04]
And you know, like this probably went on for four days was like the period of time that I was like really trying to figure this out. So it wasn't like months of me dragging on, like not being able to figure it out. It's probably like four days. And I was like, okay, I'm to give myself a tool. So here's what I did. I drew a bunch of dots on a piece of paper and I wrote down five goals, five non-negotiables, bunch of dots on a piece of paper and five non-negotiables. And I said to myself, Rob,
We are going for progress here. We are not aiming for perfection. We do not need to get everything on this list done, but we do need to do some things. So I made a deal with myself and the deal was this. Every day that you complete two of these non-negotiables, you fill in one of the dots on the piece of paper and over time, visually being able to see your progress, having...
five goals written out to help you show up consistently in these areas of your life that really matter to you. This is going to help you create your own momentum. I was really tired of looking to the outside world to inspire me. You know, I was tired of scrolling to try and like, re-spark my own creativity. I was tired of looking to other people to tell me what to do after grief, after chaos, after challenge.
So I really wanted to stir up my own inspiration. I wanted to find a way to keep myself accountable without having to rely on someone or, you know, peoples on the internet or whatever it was. So I created this stupidly simple system for myself and I started that day. So some of my goals were to walk 10,000 steps a day, to journal,
for reflection, clarity, or manifestation. Okay, so 10,000 steps obviously is for my body, okay, physical movement. Journaling is for my mind, my heart. My third goal was to post on social media or to share a sales link to get myself back in consistency in my business. So that was my third goal. The fourth goal was doing something strictly for the joy of it, sitting down and playing with my kids, saying yes to a fun invitation.
[09:26]
cooking a really exciting meal, going to the playground after school with my kids, like just doing something fun that wasn't directly related to a result or a specific outcome, painting, creating, reading a romance book, okay, whatever. So doing something for the joy of it. And then my last non-negotiable was no alcohol, okay? Creating a boundary around alcohol for clarity and you know.
discipline. So those were my five non-negotiables. I had to complete two of these in a day in order to fill the dot in and that's, that's it. Okay. Two out of the five dots, not all five, not perfect execution, just two things to make progress. Now here's why this worked for me. Okay. I have raging ADHD. I didn't get diagnosed until like, I don't know when it was now, maybe a year and a half or two years ago.
But this like diagnosis was like, my gosh, hello. Nice to meet you. Have known you my whole life, but now I finally understand you. So having this tracker for my own ADHD brain has been a game changer. Like I can see the goals and I see the dot and I know exactly what to do to make the progress. Okay. I can't trust my memory to just like do the thing. I have to have it written down.
I can't rely on my feelings to like guide me because they're big and they're distracting. So this tracker has allowed me to see the goal, do the goal to fill the dot in, not to rely on my feelings or my mood, but just to take the freaking action that I want that's in alignment with where I'm going. And as I see those dots filling up, my ADHD brain is getting a hit of dopamine.
and a really positive reinforcement to keep going, right? So the other layer of this is if you're into human design at all, I'm a manifesting generator, which means that I literally need variety and flexibility. So some days I hit all five of these non-negotiables and I'm like, I'm fucking stoked, I'm flying. And some days I barely manage two, but both count as winning and there's spaciousness within this system for me.
[11:53]
to have choice, to stay flexible, to stay a little bit spontaneous and to have fun with it, right? So these are reasons why this tracker works for me. I'm curious about you and your wiring. There's also a ton of interesting pieces in here for behavioral science. I am super low conformity.
So that means that I am literally designed to break the rules. So too many rules, too much structure, too much discipline just makes me want to rebel. So if you look at my behavioral analysis, you will see like, man, this girl can't actually stick to a really clear strategy, a super rigid structure. She's not meant for the same daily routines day after day after day. She's got to mix it up. I'm also
a really fast paced mover. So when I get a thrust of energy, which is my energy type, I get this burst, this thrust of energy, and then I like to move really fast with that energy. And then that energy weens. So my energy is designed to move in these waves. So what happens with this tracker is on the days that my energy is thrusting, I can do all five and feel fucking great. And then when that thrust of energy sort of weens and dies off,
I'm still going to do the two non negotiables. I'm still going to make progress. I'm still going to move forward. I'm still going to do what I said I'm going to do. But I get to do it in a way that honors my energy. So I'm not going to burn out. I'm not going to rebel. And really cool. I'm highly dominant in my behavioral analysis. So my operating system is like, you know, like
I like to be in control. I like to be direct. I like to see results. I like to say it like it is. I like to do what needs to get done now. Right? And so this tracker for me is like, here are the non-negotiables. Here's what I need to do. And boom, let's do it. So there are so many reasons that this tracker works for me. And then there's all of these reasons that this tracker I think could really support you, right? If you have a hard time staying consistent.
[14:12]
If you are a recovering perfectionist who likes to do everything, well, actually this tracker is just asking you to do two things. So it's going to test you. Like, can you fill that dot in when you only do two things? Can you let yourself get away with not doing five things and still recognize yourself as a winner, as someone who's getting shit done? You know, if you are someone who has a really hard time,
knowing what to do in a day. Maybe you have 15 free minutes and you know that you want to like work towards something and you have this big goal, but then these 15 minutes arrive and you're like, oh my God, should I take a nap? Should I go for a walk? Should I do sit-ups? Should I post on social media? And by the time you are done considering what to do in that 15 minutes, that 15 minutes is gone.
So this tracker is going to help you maintain consistent action over time. And I wanna tell you why this is so important. Okay, here's what happened to me in just 20 days. 20 days of using this tracker. I walked over 100,000 steps. Maybe that's not a big deal, but to me, it feels like a big deal, like 100,000 steps. That's a lot of steps and I did it, you know?
So that's a win. I also sold over $20,000 in my business, which was also a huge win because before that I hadn't been selling at all. So 100,000 steps showing up in my business, I make 20K in 20 days and I started showing up consistently on social media again. So these three things like very obviously started happening.
And I mean, there are so many other things, in, you know, for the sake of 17 minutes and keeping this podcast and this story short enough, those are the three biggest results that I had in 20 days. I started shifting from surviving to thriving, which was really the whole goal of this. I needed to get out of the like, you know, swimming in the deep end. I needed to get out of my like floating, not really having an anchor mode. And this tracker helped me do that. I started to feel inspired again.
[16:34]
I started to be re-energized. I started to like build trust in myself. I started to gain more self-confidence. I started to feel like myself. And thank God for that. And honestly, I loved this system so much that I decided to keep it going. So I'm doing it every single, I'm doing it until the end of 2025. So I've got 120 dots on a piece of paper. But what I've got for you today is a tracker. The 21 day breakthrough.
It's free. When you download it, the link is in the show notes. When you download it, you're gonna get like the step-by-step of how to map out and choose your non-negotiables. You're also gonna get a cute little tracker page, piece of paper that you can print. Mine is hanging on the wall in my closet so that I look at it every single day and I see the dots being filled in and it is so glorious and so rewarding and so stupidly simple.
but it works. So you're gonna print out your tracker, you're gonna fill the dots in, and you're going to start to shift. You're gonna stop floating and you're gonna anchor. And this is so important because the woman who can show up to do her steps, her daily steps, is way more likely to show up and post on social media. The woman who posts on social media is gonna be more likely to post a sales link. The woman who does something for fun,
is more likely to be inspired to post on social media. Like all of these five non-negotiables are going to support the other non-negotiables, right? It's not so much about getting the thing done. It's about building the momentum. And when you start to prove to yourself that you can do the thing that you say you're gonna do, walking, then you're gonna be like, okay, I said I was gonna post. you're gonna be like, mentally, cognitively, intuitively, you're gonna be like, I...
I am a woman who can do this, right? So you're gonna build momentum in all areas of your life as you start to show up in these really simple ways. Two things a day, five options for you, right? Like five goals, you do two of those actions, two of those goals a day. let me say that again, okay? So this is like so simple for you, right? You write down five daily actions that you're gonna take for 21 days when you complete
[18:53]
Two of those actions, you fill in the dot and over time, the results are amazing. My 20 day results blew my mind. I think your 20 day results are gonna blow your mind. And if you're anything like me, then you're just gonna keep going with this because you realize, A, how easy it is and B, how impactful and supportive it is. So go grab the piece of paper, print it off, put it on your wall, draw some dots, fill the dots in, do your actions, build the momentum. The tracker is free.
You can find the link in my show note. It's called the 21 day breakthroughs for entrepreneurs. going to take you from chaos to consistency to really help you anchor in to those results. And remember that this is the foundational work that makes entrepreneurs successful, right? Once you build these foundations, success is going to be so much easier for you to not only achieve, but to sustain. And that's what we're here for sustainable success as you who you are.
Go grab the tracker. can't wait for you to try it. Let me know what your results are. Like, let me know how it feels. Share your journey with me and share it with your friends. You know, I bet you've got a whole girl gang that could use this. So pass it along. Let's make some progress and 2025 feeling rock solid. And I love you. I'll see you next week on the podcast. Ciao.
