Robyn Savage (00:01.048)
Hello, welcome back to the 17 minutes podcast. I'm Robin, your host. This is a podcast, you know, where we really look at the inner workings of the human you. And I want to ask you here in this space to, you know, get curious about yourself, right? To get curious about who you are as a person, as an entrepreneur, as a CEO.
as a conduit for your vision. And what I mean by that, the conduit of your vision is really this question that I've asked myself and had asked to me many times in the last 24 hours. And I'll tell you about that in a minute. But this question really is who do I have to be in order to create what I want?
whether that is a million dollar business, which is a pretty standard dream for a lot of you, whether that's a more present mother, whether that's a more creative and inspired person, whether that's a more patient and compassionate person, whether that's a more visible and sought after coat, whatever it is that you want to be. One of the questions that we really need to ask ourselves
and to sit in spaciousness and silence to really get clear on the answer is who do I have to be in order for this to come through? Now we've talked on this podcast about foundations work, we've talked about life rehab and building those foundations for yourself and I really think that the foundation work of becoming a person
who can hold, who can build, who can...
Robyn Savage (02:01.038)
messily create whatever it is that you want is honestly 75 % of the challenge that a lot of us have. And here's what I mean by that. You know, if I want to build a million dollar business, well, you better believe that who I need to become in order to build that business is someone different than I'm currently being in this moment. I can't keep doing the same things. I can't keep sleeping until noon. I can't
raving until six in the morning I can't keep you know spending all my time binging Netflix and doom-scrolling social media I've got to show up differently
But it's not as easy as that, right? Because if it was as easy as that, then we'd all be doing it. So in order to build that foundation to become the person who can have the million dollar brand, the million dollar business, I have to look at myself. I have to look at my actions, my habits, my behaviors. I have to look at my choices and say, all right, what's got to change here?
Now, obviously, that was a really dramatic example. I don't often rave until six in the morning. I don't often ever sleep in until noon, in fact, and I'm guessing that you don't either. But I used this really generous example to make it extremely obvious for you, for us to like dive into this conversation. And the truth is, these things are often extremely nuanced. Okay, so
One of the things that I'm currently looking at in my own moment of time in terms of what I want to build and who I have to be to create that is this. Okay. I really, I really want to make
Robyn Savage (03:53.576)
more cool shit. know, one of my big, big, big dreams and visions is to, and this might surprise some of you actually, but one of my big dreams is to design clothes. You know, my daughters and I talk about it all the time. We sort of have this little
on-the-go like side quest that we're exploring together. It's called the Savage Sisters. It's a clothing brand that we create together where we take their art and create clothes and then donate a lot of the money to help kids around the world get their hands on art supplies. So we are slowly chipping away at this and
You know, this is like a vision that may never come to life, but it's just something fun for my kids and I to dream about. And when I get really honest with myself, I would love for this to come to life. So if I, if I look at this and I say one day, you know, like, you know what? I'm really ready to explore this. I'm really ready to take the next step with this. Well, then I'm going to have to sit there and be like, okay, who do I need to be in order for that to happen? Well, I need to carve out time first and foremost.
to carve out time to make this happen.
Secondly, I need to be someone who's willing to explore an entirely new industry. That means that I have to become a student. It means that I have to be willing to put myself back in the role of the beginner and really learn from, from the start, right? Like, how do I start a clothing line? What does it look like to enter the fashion industry? Where do I get my hands on samples? How do I get things printed? What, what's the deal with shipping? How do I do this in a sustainable?
Robyn Savage (05:37.248)
way. What is the cost behind all this? There's so much learning. Okay. So first I have to carve out time. Secondly, I have to be willing to start at the beginning. Thirdly, I have to put myself in the identity of someone who owns a clothing line. Now, this is what I really want to talk the most about today. This is the identity piece. This is where we have to curate
an entirely new vision of ourselves. And continuing to use this example, you know, for me, I've been a brand strategist, copywriter,
online business owner for a really long time. It's a really easy identity for me to own now because it's really familiar to me, right? It's been my Instagram bio for ages. I've helped hundreds of entrepreneurs. I've been making a living doing this for long enough and I've helped enough people get results that it's easy for me to say, this is what I do, this is who I am, and this is who I have to be in order to do it. And...
When I step away from that identity and I start to ask myself, okay, now that I'm in this position or now that I'm ready to start exploring a new identity or a different chapter, what does that look like? And what starts to happen to a lot of us is that imposter syndrome starts to take over, right? Like, God, I don't know anything about that. I have no experience. have
no credibility, I have no education. And how can I what makes me someone who can do that. And all of these thoughts start to creep in like little like creepy crawly critters that start to like murder, you know, like move in and take over the dream. They start to
Robyn Savage (07:28.406)
tell us things like, you'll never be able to do that. Or that's way too much work. Or you're 39 years old, you know, like as if you want to be someone who starts all over again, right? It'll literally just shit, take a big old crap all over the vision telling you that whatever you a minute ago believed
was possible for you is actually not realistic, is not logical, is not feasible, is not for you. Now, yesterday I attended an event. It was called feast hosted by my dear sweet friend, Emily, who I love. She's this like bubbly, contagious firecracker of a
person, but she's kind of like cotton candy, like a cotton candy firecracker. And she's, she's doing it, right? She's like living, living her vision delusionally, but practically, and she is creating this identity for herself day after day after day. And while I was at the event yesterday, all four of the speakers sort of asked this question in one way or another.
Like who do I need to be? How do I make myself or how do I create safety within my body in order for me to create that in order for me to become that? What is my intuition telling me about who I could be or what's got to be done or what I want to do in order to create that?
And then how am going to go through this change and this transformation, empowering myself, not belittling myself and letting those little creepy crawler critters take these giant craps all over my vision. And yesterday I spent the day
Robyn Savage (09:26.826)
with this version of myself that owns a clothing line, which was really interesting because you know that vision for me still feels really far away. And if you've got a vision and you've got a dream that that still feels like it's chapters away for you, like maybe you're someone who says, you know, I'd like to write a book, but I'll do that when blank or I'd love to start a business, but I'm waiting until blank or
I would love to have a million dollar business, but I'm going to do that when blank, right? So maybe you have a dream, you have a vision and you've put distance between yourself and whatever it is that you want. Now, what I realized yesterday that sort of blew me away and took me off guard a little bit was like, wait a minute. This vision, this idea of who I want to be isn't actually as far away.
as I've been telling myself that it has to be. And what was happening, I realized, is that all of these stories, all of these like kind of safety mechanisms that are keeping me in my familiar place of brand strategist, online business owner, keeping me doing the things that I'm doing, being the person that I've been for so long, are actually stories that can be reprogrammed, rewritten right now. Now,
Of course I know this, right? I coach, I talk to, I mentor a lot of my entrepreneurs through these blocks themselves. And it's really fascinating to me how much we don't recognize these stories are like really driving the wheel. So one thing that I really want to invite you to sit with and to get really curious with for yourself is, Hey,
that thing that you want, that thing that you're going to do when blank, what is the story that you're telling yourself about how far away it is for you? And is that actually true? Does it have to be true? And am I willing or prepared to rewrite that story for myself?
Robyn Savage (11:49.835)
right now? Could I start to try on that identity? Could I start to explore the possibility
of myself meeting that version of me sooner. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but could I start to explore what it would feel like? Could I start to explore what actions I would take? What choices I would need to be making? What people I would be surrounding myself by? What I would be investing in? How I would be showing up? What I would be wearing or saying if and when I did decide to step into that identity?
Now, I'm willing to bet that as you sit with that version of yourself, a couple of things are going to happen. First and foremost, you're going to say, OK, now this story that I've had of myself is a little bit more real. Right now, I've actually looked at it.
Now I've actually kind of written a few things down or I've had this vision in my mind of who that version of me is and maybe it's not as far away. Maybe it's not someone as completely different as I originally thought it was.
or maybe you're like, damn, this is a full script rewrite, right? Like I have to change so much about myself in order to become that version of myself. And I don't care which side of, which side of the coin you landed on when you asked yourself this question, what I'm really curious about is what is one thing, one thing that you could do to start embracing that version.
Robyn Savage (13:35.357)
of you now. So one thing I started last night when I got home from that event was a Pinterest board of what this woman looks like. Not of the clothes that she makes, not of the cool designs that are on the clothes or the style of clothing that I love and want to make. I've already done that. Okay. But who I am in that role.
of the CEO, the owner and founder of a clothing line. What does that look like for me? Okay. So I want you to start to just explore this version of yourself that you don't think that you are ready to become yet. So one thing that I know from doing all of this work,
over all of all of these years, all of this work and all of these years is that we all have strengths and weaknesses and the coolest thing. So last night as I was sitting down really kind of digging into the layers, the feelings, the actions, the choices of this version of me that is
You know, the seed is planted. She's coming. We don't know when, but she's coming. Right. When I sat down with this version of me, was like, damn, so many of my strengths.
So many of my natural traits, the things that make me, me, my authentic, real Robin self are directly applicable to this new venture, to this new idea. And something kind of dawned on me and I want to share this with you. How I've applied myself, how I've taken my strengths, my
Robyn Savage (15:30.803)
magnetic qualities, my behavioral traits and apply them to my online business is not actually that different from who I have to be in order to make this clothing queen version of me real. So
It's gonna require new skills. It's gonna require a whole new set of learning, but it does not require me to become a different me. It does not require me to change my makeup, like my internal makeup, not the makeup on my face, but my internal makeup. It does not require me to change my voice. It does not require me to...
to become someone that I am not, it's going to require me to apply myself in a different way. And this is really
what the identity report and what behavioral science is really interesting at showing us is like, I can see what my strengths are. I know what my natural self is going to excel at. I know how to market, how to communicate, how to sell. I know how I make decisions. I know how my energy is wired. I know who I work best with. I know what my blocks are. I can see my blind spots. It's all right there.
And now I can take that information and what I know to be true about myself and I can apply that to my vision of myself as a clothing line, a founder. I don't even know what to call myself. That's how new this all is. like, what would my title be? I don't even know, but it doesn't matter right now because we're playing in the vision.
Robyn Savage (17:17.207)
Right? We're playing in the vision. It gets to be messy. We're moving ingredients around in a bowl until we come up with the perfect recipe. But right now, what I can see is that these are the strengths that I am going to apply in every area of my life, no matter how many times I change my career, no matter how many new ideas I pursue. And this was a little bit of a revelation for me because
So far, I've really only applied my own behavioral science, my own identity report to the work that I'm doing, to the work that I'm familiar with, to get better at that, to grow within that. And yesterday, I just had this like aha moment of, my gosh, I know all of my strengths. I know.
how I am wired to do this and because I know those strengths and because I know who I am, I can apply that to something new and that journey is going to be so much easier because never once in that journey am I ever going to try to be someone that goes against my natural self. So this was kind of a cool understanding and I want you to get curious with yourself like how well do I know myself?
How well do I know what's for me and what's not?
How well do I know my strengths? Could I name them? Do I know what people are genuinely attracted to within me? What's my pull? What's my magnetic quality? And equally as importantly, what are my blocks? What am I really not meant for? What's gonna drain my energy and stress me out and produce anxiety in my system that's gonna burn me out and drain me?
Robyn Savage (19:08.303)
And now that I know this, you guys, it's sort of like this, um, it's sort of this like really amazing thing, right? Because when you know yourself, when we know ourselves, our ability to create the life, the business, the bank account, whatever it is that we want for ourselves, we are sort of given this roadmap. And I don't want to call it a roadmap, but we're sort of given this like,
clear understanding and this foundational understanding of who we are and when we can work with that.
When we can massage that, when we can put that in the ingredients bowl and say, okay, here's what I'm working with. Here's who I am. Here's what my strengths are. We reduce the amount of time it takes for us to create the vision that we want so badly for ourselves. So if you don't have your identity report and you're curious about your strengths, how you're to market, how you're to sell, what people are drawn to in you, what your magnetic qualities are, how you decide, you know, all these things, then the link for your identity report
is in the show notes, I highly recommend starting with that. It's an incredible tool.
And my sort of homework, if you will, for you on the other side of this episode is to really get curious about a few things. First and foremost, what is that vision that you're desiring to create for yourself? What is the next chapter? Maybe it's not something as dramatic or something as bold and big as like starting a clothing line. I understand, you know, I'm a big idea generator. I'm a big vision.
Robyn Savage (20:54.011)
person. So your idea might not be that and that is perfect for you. But what is that next chapter, whether it's the evolution of your current business, whether it's the exploration of a new relationship, or, you know, starting a YouTube channel or whatever it is, okay, just what is it? What's the next chapter?
And then who do you have to be in order to facilitate that in order to become the conduit, the person who can bring that dream, that vision to life. And also what are you working with? What are the ingredients in your bowl? What are your strengths? What parts of you now are going to help you?
Become that version of yourself and what parts of yourself are you going to acknowledge and honor as? parts of yourself that that might Hold you back or create these limitations Create these challenges and how are you gonna plan around that right and what I mean by that last piece is you know? One of the things for me is like I'm not a details person
It's not, I'm not, it drains my energy. It wears me down. It's, it just sucks me dry. It like shuts me down. It's like a big old door slamming in my face. So for me, I know that as I explore this next chapter of starting, you know, a clothing line, whatever that looks like you guys is that I need to delegate those details right away. So that's what I mean by like what ingredients are not going in the bowl for me details. No, they don't go in the bowl.
Right? I do not start the clothing line until I have an assistant or someone around or a system in place that can handle the details. Like that's just, it's just a non-negotiable. Okay. So I want you to ask yourself, what are the ingredients that go in the bowl for me to create what's next?
Robyn Savage (22:49.995)
what stays out of the bowl. And if you don't know that, that's where your identity report is going to come in super handy. And how willing am I to begin? How willing am I to begin? Now for me last night and yesterday at this event felt like a real beginning because that was the first time that I really admitted that I want this. Like not just like, that would be nice one day, but like, no, fuck it. I want this. I want to explore this. So I want you to get curious about what that
step is and maybe the first step for you is listening to this podcast, allowing yourself to get really honest about what that next chapter looks like and just sitting with it and getting curious and exploring what's possible for you when you let yourself play with or envision a slightly different identity than the one that you're wearing right now.
Okay, that's it. We are over time for 17 minutes. have not been nailing the 17 minute timing for these podcasts the last couple of weeks. I'm not going to beat myself up about it.
